Breast MRI and Biopsy

Breast MRI has been around for many years, and has been fully incorporated into the practice of women’s imaging. The use of breast MRI is increasing with the better understanding of the appropriate uses of this technology in the area of screening for and evaluating the extent of breast cancer.At both Piedmont Fayette Hospital (PFH) and Piedmont Newnan Hospital (PNH), breast MRI technology is used in screening women at high risk for breast cancer and for evaluating the extent of disease preoperatively for those diagnosed with breast cancer when breast conservation therapy is being considered.

MRI is capable of identifying disease that may be undetectable by clinical exam, ultrasound, or mammography.If a lesion is detected only on MR, it is imperative this modality be used to perform the diagnostic biopsy. The American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation program requires the ability to perform MR directed biopsies in order to receive accreditation.

Piedmont Fayette Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the state to be fully accredited by the ACR. Piedmont’s new facility, Piedmont Newnan Hospital, is currently undergoing the process of ACR accreditation as well.Both hospitals conduct regularly scheduled supporting conferences attended by physicians and other healthcare providers to discuss appropriate evaluation and treatment of this potentially curable disease.
