Darren Kies, MD

Interventional Radiology, Interventional Oncology, Diagnostic Radiology
Dr. Kies is a board-certified interventional radiologist with special interest and expertise in interventional oncology, a subspecialty field of interventional radiology that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and cancer-related problems using targeted minimally invasive procedures performed under image guidance. He has a particular interest in the management and treatment of primary and secondary liver cancers utilizing percutaneous tumor ablation and/or catheter directed intra-arterial therapies such as transarterial chemoembolization and yttrium-90 radioembolization. He also has experience using these techniques for the treatment of renal cancers, lung cancers, and osseous metastatic disease.
Additional interests of note include vertebral augmentation for both benign and malignant compression fractures, percutaneous biliary interventions for benign and malignant obstruction, portal vein embolization prior to hepatic resection, management of bleeding complications and encephalopathy related to portal hypertension, complex IVC filter retrieval, and uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). He is also an expert at performing arterial procedures through the wrist (radial artery access), which affords patients more comfort and faster time to discharge. Particularly useful applications for this technique include transradial liver therapies, and transradial uterine fibroid embolization (TRUFE).
